Digimon.

...yes, dammit, Digimon.

Idk. In America (the English dub) it's really rather goofy. Of course it is always a kid's show, Japan or America, but after watching the Japanese version-- er, well, it's a little more serious than the American one. Just a little.

Yeah, okay, I like it. I was a Pokemon geek first, so for a while I detested Digimon on the principle that it and Pokemon were running at the same-ish time and both had similar monsters and I just couldn't abide that some folks thought Digimon was better, because Pokemon is OBVIOUSLY superior. (Okay, and I still think that to this day-- Pokemon trumps Digimon every day, always.)

The art is cartoony but unique, and really I don't mind it. It can be incredibly cute at times and at the very least it isn't bland. I like how they sometimes render the backgrounds as sort of splotches of color.

But mostly I like it because it's actually trippy as all fuck. Phone booths on the beach, telephone poles and cruise ships in the desert, a trolley with no tracks on the lake... The weird shit that happens with Koushiro/Izzy's computer. And while sometimes the characters are upbeat and goofy, there is (especially in the Japanese version) an undercurrent of more serious things (Koushiro is adopted, I think, and Yamato/Matt and Takeru/TK are brothers but their parents are divorced, and the ever-present weight on the children that they have no clue where they are, why they're there, how they got there, or how the fuck things work there).

I don't know. It's not particularly thought-provoking, but it's an easy-to-watch adventure with some cool stylings.

...+Taichi/Yamato (Tai/Matt) <3

...also I lol'd at the 3rd season English dub. I don't like the third season at all, but... It has Ougi's, Tohdoh's, and Viletta's English voices. lolololol it NEVER fails to amuse me to hear voice actor's different roles, especially since I am usually so terrible at voice-recognition.

When he was a kid my boyfriend was a fan of the TV show and actually liked it better than Pokemon, although I think when it came to games and cards he always chose Pokemon. I never got into it because when I was that age I was desperately trying to be an adult for some reason so I avoided a lot of things popular with kids my age (I'm just glad I finally broke down and read Harry Potter in my teens).
As for Tohdoh's VA being in it, I don't think there's an American dub Stephen Blum is not in. I am barely exaggerating. I mean, maybe not some of the Funimation dubs because he's based in LA, but he's in SO MUCH.
I thought I'd heard plenty of Villetta's VA, but while she's had plenty of roles it's mostly because she sounds a bit like Wendee Lee, who is very prolific.

Well, yes. I think the Digimon anime beats the Pokemon anime, tbh. I've barely watched any of the Pokemon anime. BUT THE GAMES ARE LIKE... THE BEST GAMES EVER CREATED. LIKE DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED, I HAVE A HUUUUUGE COLLECTION. If I were a Pokemon Trainer, I'd be a Super Nerd!! Super Nerd Rex wants to battle!!! 8U

And the voice actors-- uh, hell yes. I don't ever know their names, but I hear the "Tohdoh" voice A LOT. He's all over the damn place. He's got a very distinctive voice. But beats me if I have any clue who Wendee Lee is. I am very bad at remembering any sort of actor, movie or voice. I remember ones who seem to go for main characters-- Johnny Depp in the movies, Johnny Young Bosch in the voice --but don't even ask me to name any others. I just call them the voice of my favorite role. It's the "Ougi voice"! XDDD

Oh, even though I know a handful more VAs by name, I often still think of them as characters, typically the first biggest role I heard them in. I typically tend to learn the names of ones I hear over and over and over because I associate them with so many characters, or my favorites. Ironically both Steve Blum and Wendee Lee I both heard first in Cowboy Bebop, so I think of Blum as "Spike voice" most and I almost exclusively think of Lee as "Faye Valentine voice." I think of Spike Spencer (Rolo) as "Shinji Voice" and I was so excited when I heard he was playing Rolo because even though I hate him, I knew Shinji's voice would be TOO PERFECT. OTOH I was pretty surprised to hear "Vash voice" was going to be Lelouch, but now I think of Johnny Yong Bosch as "Lelouch voice" instead.

Yeah... I think of it as "Lelouch Voice" now, too. Maybe because I heard more of him as Lelouch than any other character (50 episodes). XD ;;

Steven Blum, though I didn't know his real name until you just told me, just has so many awesome roles that he wasn't one character in my mind. He was "Shishio Voice" and "Mugen Voice" and "Zabuza Voice" and "Dumb Villian in Digimon Voice" and even "Roger Voice" (though I only watched one episode of Big O). Mostly he was, "omg Mr. Rough Voice!" LOLOLOL and now I googled his roles, I find he was also the lovable red dino digimon, Guilmon, and that blows my mind. He was also the grumpy cat with the huge ballsac in FLCL. Mind = blown. Craaaazy.
