Random anime I love [1]
Trigun. Classic! Has anyone NOT seen Trigun? It would weird me out because Trigun was so incredibly popular around here. All the kids watched it when it was running on TV. Even the kids who never watched another anime ever-- those kids watched Trigun here where I live.
Trigun? It makes me want to be a better person.
A lot of it is dumb shit, stupid action, blowing stuff up, and Ridiculous Feats of Badassery. It's shonen from the 90s, what can you do. But of all the other anime that follow this stupid shonen model and try to teach you morals and whatnot-- Naruto and Bleach and whatever --none of them really touch Trigun in that regard. Naruto doesn't make me want to be a better person. Trigun does.
Goofy shonen hero who, despite badassery and the devil's reputation, refuses to kill. Rurouni Kenshin? I think Trigun is better than Rurouni Kenshin. Kenshin is repenting for his crimes of the past. Vash has never killed in his entire damn life. Put that way, Kenshin is more selfish than Vash. Vash is so good and pure that it hurts you and makes you feel ashamed that you aren't as good of a person as you could be.
Also... Knives vs. Vash-- the greatest anime adversaries of all time?! Like, don't get me wrong, the only reason I ever gave two shits about Naruto was Naruto and Sasuke because omg, those two are lovely. But Knives and Vash top it. Top it soooo much.
Go, Vash, go! Save Gunsmoke with your LOVE AND PEACE.
I want to write for Trigun, I honestly do, but plot-wise it is very neatly tied up by the end. There's only one "big" avenue to explore once it's over so of course it's played out.
...also, lololol, English dub for Vash = Johnny Yong Bosch. So of course I have my moments of rofl'ing while comparing Lelouch and Vash and trying to imagine Lelouch making a peace sign and saying that the world IS MADE OF LOVE AND PEACE.
[/just got done rewatching after many years. No one to express feelings to.] This isn't me reccing because I think it's obscure or something, not by any means. This is just me venting the awesome. ...but if you haven't seen it, omg that's weird, but also, go watch it! Gee!

For the longest time I always heard Johnny Young Bosch characters as Vash, and the hilarity/amusement/oh-hey-that-fits/etc reaction would come from that comparison. Now I connect his voice most strongly to Lelouch, and I do think that if I went back and watched Trigun again my brain would be
full of fuckamused and slightly confused to hear that voice saying those things and coming out of that person.In regards to Vash's character, he was an adorkable pacifist before I found that kind of character endearing so I could sort of take him or leave him. I liked the plot and I liked Legato and I liked Knives. I think my philosophy was closest to Wolfwood's and I'm not entirely sure (as it was years ago) but I think I was actually a little disappointed that he caved into Vash's zero tolerance policy.
By the way have you seen the movie? Badlands Rumble, I think it was? I was a bit disappointed as I found a thirty-minute episode works better as a thirty-minute episode than as a ninety-minute movie. But it was still fun to see new Trigun.

...I actually liked Legato least. I mean, he served his purpose, and I admit his design and theme song was badass. But idk. He seemed total godmode to me evn at... Gee, how old was I when I first saw him? I think, like, ten?
I LIKE VASH WHEN HE CRIES FOR PEOPLE WAAAAH VASH WAAAH and when he imposes sexual abstinence upon himself and when he chows down on donuts! ...but yeah, I'm closer to Wolfwood as well. I'd /like/ to be as noble and good and kind as Vash, but that would get in the way of my goals, of what's /necessary/. But opposite from you, I liked that he caved in. Gives me a sense of hope.
No, didn't see the movie, but someone had written an extensive synopsis that I read. And ditto-- first thought: "this sound like a regular episode!" XD

Trigun does make me want to be a better person. I found Vash, in general, to be a very refreshing sort of hero. Because he really means what he says, and LIVES by it. The stuff Legato and Knives do to him are rather cruel because it nearly manages to break him. But yes, I love it and it's a pet fandom of mine. Something I loved writing and reading fic for and always see myself returning to.
And yes, it's a bit of a silly series. The first few episodes are your usual action shounen thing, and it's a bit lolweird to see the latter episodes get so serious and distressing. But still, the show is good, and I don't regret having watched it.

I stayed with Naruto sooooo long. It gradually got worse and worse. The art lost all individualistic style. I missed Naruto's squinty eyes-- now he's typical handsome shonen hero. I just got angrier and angrier with the series. I finally stopped reading it about the time Pein was introduced. "THIS IS THE DUMBEST SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN."
...I also felt this way about Bleach, which I got into much later. Bleach was never a high-ranking fandom for me. I read about ten novels, I think, and watched the anime while they were saving Rukia. (Dunno if you know anything about Bleach...) Then I was like, "Oh, they're stretching the fights this much this early? Fine, I am so not wasting my time on this."
Same with Rurouni Kenshin, except I got into it even younger than I got into Naruto. I actually finished reading it because I liked Enishi's character and the Tomoe story, but again, the fights were so goddamn stupid that I found myself skipping over a lot of them.
...and Inuyasha as well...
I dunno if you know these series, but basically... The whole shonen shebang irritates the shit out of me. I almost always end up hating shonen because none of them know when to quit and they go on for fucking ever and the fights just escalate into retardation and pissing contests.
Trigun? ..........well. It is indeed very shonen at times. I was annoyed by a few episodes because some of them were a bit repetitive.
--but I have loved no other hero like I love Vash. He is the epitome of cool IMO. I think he might be my favorite main character of all time, even over Lelouch and Sai and Touya and definitely over Harry and maybe even over Jean Luc Picard and hey, possibly even tied with Data. [/tangent. Lists off various characters you may or may not know about]
...Vash is just forever a hero. He doesn't accept evil within himself at all. There is nothing shameful about Vash, nothing he does makes me embarrassed. There is nothing about him that "could be better", if you know what I mean. (Like Naruto could be less stupid and Kenshin could be less holier-than-thou and Harry could be less reckless...) No, I wouldn't want Vash to change at all.
But yeah. Trigun. Classic. I think anyone who likes anime should watch it. It ended in good time, the themes were wrapped very nicely, and I liked many of the stories. (though the manga fleshed them out a bit better... Though I didn't have the patience for the manga, because the action scenes are very confusing and the art style is pretty ugly.)

Oh, Naruto. I loved the series a long time ago. When I felt that Kishi still fleshed out the characters, and didn't *sighs*. I actually preferred the earlier art too. Among with the older arcs and all. Ugh. Pein. That was beyond stupid yes. Be glad you're not still reading. Just a pain XD.
Ah yes, I read up until the Rescue Rukia arc too. Loved it at first because the action scenes weren't as dragging as in Naruto. But meh, it got worse. Much worse and someone told me people turned into butterflies in the manga some while ago o.0
I only read one volume of the manga and watched the anime. I loved Kenshin. But yhea, the fight scenes :/
Oh Inuyasha <3. Was my first manga love. And I adored the series but it got DRAGGING ): But it's one of the few series I intend to re-read.
Shounen. I'm picky with it. I prefer seinen because it has darker, edgier storylines with good battles sometimes.
Vash is very special and dear to me too. [LOLZ, I know Picard, I know Harry too! XD]. Yes, he's definitely a hero. I wouldn't want him to change either because he's just so lovely and <3. Vash is the sort of hero that you really can admire.
The manga did flesh things out better. It had some lovely scenes. Hmm, some of the things were confusing in the manga, but it is worth reading through IF you have the patience XD.

Bleach manga was very cool and stylish, with a lot of minor characters (which I love, minor characters tend to be my favorites). I was disappointed when it left the supernatural/creepy/dead people realm and devolved into more senseless shonen pissing contests. (This is also why I stopped watching Yu Yu Hakusho. Should've stayed about ghosts.)
I watched quite a bit of the Kenshin anime at the same time I was reading the manga. Then someone tipped me off that the story of Kenshin's wife was manga exclusive and I was like OMG KENSHIN HAD A WIFE and went with the manga after that. So what was this OVA about?
Inuyasha, yeah, probably my first big anime/manga love, too. Idk, it's hard to tell, I watched/read RuroKen, YYH, and Inuyasha around the same time... Tender age of 7 or something? And Inuyasha just went on FOREVER. Like... 150~ episodes, or 600~ chapters? Something like that? I just can't do it, I can't. Code Geass is long to me at 50 episodes. Trigun was the perfect length at 26. Things like FLCL (6 episodes) and Paranoia Agent (13) are good, too.
The Trigun manga... I've heard things about it that make me want to reread it. I think I got until the first volume of Maximum and stopped. All the characters are so bulky in the shoulders, it's really ugly. But I think I'll have another go at it. I heard Knives dies in the manga, which I wouldn't like... One of the coolest themes to me in the anime is that Vash and Knives, good and evil, outside of time, never one totally triumphing over the other. The eternal struggle. ...course, I haven't read yet, so idk if that's true. Don't remember where I read that.

...Yeah that killed Bleach for me to. I loved the stylishness of the manga. I loved the whole supernatural/creepy stuff. But then it just became Ichigo fights this, Ichigo fights that.
The first OVA is about Tomoe and Kenshin. I think, with some deviations from the novel. BUT recommended. Heavily recommended.
Oh, I know. I want to read Inuyasha because I really liked the manga ): YYH is something I intend to watch one of those days (who knows when that will be :/).
I really don't like long anime either. Maybe cause I get bored easily, and I think you can always tell a story smoothly in fewer chapters/episodes. Code Geass was perfect to me at 50 episodes too.
Hmm, be prepared that the manga is a bit different. Darker, for one. And yeah, Knives characterisation is different. I don't wanna spoil. Personally I like the manga, I think it's worth reading, but if the style doesn't appeal to you, don't. I felt that, towards the end, things got very messy and convoluted. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't all too impressed either.

And yeah. Naruto/Sasuke is gayer and more canonically supported than Lelouch/Suzaku. Which is, uh, really saying something.
YYH? ...eh. I suggest reading it, if anything. The manga dwells slightly longer on the paranormal stuff than the anime. But myself I never finished the series.

That scene with Rem, chibi!Vash, chbi!Knives and the spider is one of those clearly engraved in my fickle memory. And the ending, oh... No good will ever come of that.
But Wolfwood is my favourite and I cried when he died. I did cry for Lelouch too, feel free laugh at my standarts. [/admires heroes, but loooves antiheroes and villains, what]
Legato was quite a psycho charmer too, btw.
The funny part with Vash is that he has 0 sympathy for his own species, locked up for eternity and farmed for energy (neither does Knives, but okay). Raised by humams, only cares about humans.

As for Legato... I don't understand the fascination with him, honestly. ^^;; As I said above, I think he does his job as a villain in the show. His visual design is cool. But his powers are too godmode in my mind and his logic makes noooooo sense. He's powerful enough to kill all these humans. Knives wants to kill the humans. If Legato hadn't pushed Vash, he wouldn't die. So... Why not just do it? Makes no sense. The moment when he spares the girls in the saloon? ...WHY? I don't get it, and he is nowhere near charming to me.
...oh, his personality is sort of like Schneizel's, I guess. And I hate Schneizel. Idk. I don't like passionless characters. But uh, if anyone can explain why these guys are appealing, be my guest! Do their lady-charming ways make your female hearts flutter? XD ;;
As for Vash not having sympathy for his own species, that's very untrue, sorry. His is shown to be very caring towards them, such as in the episode Lost July (when he empties a bottle of alcohol in the dead plant's honor, and says softly, "You were just tired"). Whenever he deals with other plants, he is very gentle and sympathetic.
However-- and I don't know whether my knowledge of the situation is colored by my reading of the manga or not --Vash and Knives are unique amongst plants. Most plants CAN'T leave their bulbs. They must stay in carefully controlled environments. Humans rely on them, they rely on humans. Without humans, plants have many malfunctions and often die. It is unknown whether most plants are even sentient (aware of their own plight)-- for one, that plant underground in the episode that Wolfwood was introduced. The plant was unaware that humans had died and kept on senselessly producing robots.

And we're talking about appealing *in fiction*. It's like watching caged tigers - from a 10000 % cooler than physical violence. I do tend to picture myself as the abuser, though. It's all about watching my darker side in action, I suppose.

Hmm, thanks for reminding me, it's been a while since I watched the show.
Well, gentle he is, but it's his personality.
I suppose what irked me was that he was okay with his species being used as batteries, but if the plants aren't even sentient and if it's a mutual reliance, then it must be okay for Vash to accept that.
