I last played it with my big brother. He is much older than me, and he has a different father. I don't consider him any less than my brother. We lived together as kids with our mom. My childhood home was a teensy little blue house on the industrial side of town. When we moved from it, we had to make several trips. On one of these trips, my other big brother and my mom went and Matt and I stayed behind. It was afternoon; the house was mostly empty; I was six, he was fourteen.

We played pattycake and other hand games, waiting in the open doorway, saying goodbye to our old house and our old life. Two kids alone in a lonely, empty house-- but we were happy.
